Robotic mowers are designed around a different maintenance routine from conventional walk-behind mowing. Rather than waiting for the grass to grow and removing a larger amount at once, the mower works regularly and trims a small amount during each cycle. This can maintain a consistent appearance while reducing the time the owner spends actively mowing.

Assessing whether a garden is suitable

The size of the lawn is only one consideration. Garden layout, gradients, narrow passages, separate grass areas, trees and fixed obstacles can all influence the system required. A simple open lawn presents a different installation challenge from a garden divided by paths, gates or landscaping features.

Different robotic systems use different methods to define and navigate the working area. Installation requirements, positioning technology and management features vary, so the mower should be selected around the actual garden rather than on area capacity alone. Reliable charging access and a suitable location for the charging station must also be planned.

What to consider before installation

Some preparation may be required before a robotic mower can work effectively. Lawn edges, holes, exposed roots, low obstacles and temporary objects should be considered, while boundaries around ponds, drops or vulnerable planting need an appropriate solution. The machine's stated gradient capability should be checked against the steepest parts of the lawn.

• Lawn area: consider the total grass coverage and the time available within the mowing schedule.
• Layout: identify narrow routes, disconnected zones and frequently used paths.
• Slopes: assess gradients and transitions rather than relying on an overall impression of the garden.
• Controls: compare the scheduling, security and management features relevant to the user.
• Seasonal care: allow for blade checks, cleaning, software or setup requirements and winter storage.

Regular mowing rather than rough clearance

A robotic mower is intended to maintain an established lawn. It is not a substitute for rough-cutting equipment where grass is already long, tangled or heavily overgrown. Once the lawn and installation are prepared, a suitable mowing schedule can be adjusted as growth changes through the season.
