Compared with larger multi-unit machines, a triplex mower can offer greater agility around the site while still covering more ground than a pedestrian cylinder mower. This makes the format relevant to golf facilities, sports grounds, formal landscapes and other professional environments where the surface quality is important and access may vary between working areas.

The three cutting units are arranged to provide consistent coverage while allowing the machine to follow the working route through turns and around features. The exact behaviour on undulations and slopes depends on the individual machine and cutting-unit setup, so the site profile should form part of the selection process.

Maintaining turf for cylinder mowing

As with other cylinder machines, a triplex mower is intended for grass that is cut regularly and maintained as fine turf. The cutting action is designed to produce a clean result at controlled heights, rather than deal with long, coarse or neglected growth. Mowing frequency, moisture, turf health and cutting-unit condition all contribute to the finish.

• Surface use: define the required height, appearance and consistency for each area.
• Contours and access: assess slopes, undulations, bridges, gateways and routes between surfaces.
• Clipping management: determine whether clippings can remain dispersed or need to be collected.

Triplex or five-gang cylinder mower?

A triplex mower may be preferable where manoeuvrability, detailed work and movement between smaller fine-turf areas are central to the job. A five-gang machine is generally considered when covering broader areas efficiently is the stronger priority. The right decision depends on the balance of surface size, access, contours and required finish across the complete site.
